Quotes From Students Regarding "12 Angry Men"
Give your impressions of the U.S. jury system after watching a jury in action in "12 Angry Men". Does it work? Why or why not? Should we keep it or try something else?
"My impression of the U.S. jury system is that it works very well becuase they give the jury a lot of time. Now that I've seen the jury in action I think it also works well. I think this becuase they give them the time to deliberate and they can go over every little piece of evidence. Therefore we should keep this court system but the only thing in this movie which I think they could change would be to have younger people and also women." ~ Student from 1st hour
"I think it does work but it puts a lot of pressure on certain people if they believe something else from the other people. It's probably the best thing that they can do, I don't think there is any better but it does have a few small flaws." ~ Student from 1st hour
"I think it would be frustrating to serve on a jury because there will be people that vote through prejudice, not evidence. For the majority of the time I think a jury works because as long as people stick to the facts and there's a couple of people, then it will work. I think we should keep it because it's a good way to solve something. If you get a lot of opinions and go through the evidence together then talk about it, then you should be able to rely on a jury vote." ~ Student from 1st hour
"I think that the U.S. jury system works. But I think they could take more time to choose better people to serve. It showed (in this movie) that there was one man that cared about the case and the rest just wanted to get it done with." ~Student from 3rd hour
"I think the U.S. jury is horrible. The jury is always fighting and can never make a decision. It works a little bit but it needs to have different people. I think we should get something else, just need to check the jury's people before putting them on a crime case because they might be prejudice or basing the case on their own life." ~ Student from 4th hour
"My first impression of the U.S. jury system was not very pleasing. The jury was just arguing and I saw no way to change the minds of the people opposing you. It looked impossible. That was their choice and they were sticking to it! Now that I have wateched a whole session of a jury in action I think differently. Changing people's minds is not that difficult if you listen to their reasoning and try to prove it wrong. It also helps if you think about it and try to re-create things. Our jury system works very well. I think so because if you work hard enough you can most likely change their minds i fyou have good reasonable doubt." ~ Student from 4th hour.
"In my opinion people on a jury have a very difficult job. First they have to deal with people who decide their vote on trivial matters such as prejudism and personal issues like shown in "12 Angry Men". They also have to decide fully for themselves their own verdict of guilty or not guilty which can be difficult when there is pressure on you. Truth be told I don't think our system works that well. This is because of many reasons. ONe reason is becuase people do have prejudices and personal issues which can wrongly affect their judgement. Also, as previously said, there's a lot of pressure to follow what others are saying instead of your own opinion. Lastly, there are so many things to think over that are small that could be overlooked becuase people just want to be done. I do think we should keep this system though becuase you'll have these problems no matter what and this system is not utterly terrible." ~ Student from 4th hour
